Nets and Surface Area

6.G.A.1

media

2

Objective

  • Recognize that surfaces of some three-dimensional (3-D) shapes are composed of two-dimensional (2-D) faces or polygons

  • Use a net to represent a 3-D figure (polyhedron)

  • Use a net to determine the surface area of a polyhedron made up of rectangles and triangles

3

Vocabulary

  • Polyhedron: a closed, 3-D shape with flat sides.

  • Base: the face of a geometric figure from which the height can be measured, refer to a face of a polyhedron.

  • face: each flat side of a polyhedron

  • net: a flat "unfolded" representation of a prism or pyramid

  • surface area: the sum of all areas of the faces of a figure

  • prism: type of polyhedron that has two bases that are identical copies of each other.

  • pyramid: type of polyhedron whose one base is a polygon and whose other faces are triangles.

  • triangular pyramid: a 3-D figure that has two parallel triangular faces that are the same size and shape

Multiple Choice

The side length of a cube is 3 in. What is true about the surface area of the cube?

1
  1. The cube has 4 surfaces that each have an area of 6 square units, so the total surface area is 24 square units.

2

The cube has 6 surfaces that each have an area of 6 square units, so the total surface area is 36 square units

3

The cube has 4 surfaces that each have an area of 9 square units, so the total surface area is 36 square units.

4

The cube has 6 surfaces that each have an area of 9 square units, so the total surface area is 54 square units.

33

Fill in the Blank

The net for a rectangular prism has three pairs of rectangles: 3 units by 8 units, 2  units by 6 units, 2 units by 4  units. What is the surface area, in square units, for this prism?
