Much writings about globalisation is by people in the developed world, where more food, fruits, vegetables are available.

Developed Countries

More economic than cultural. For example global tourism bring relatively ordinary people with very different socioeconomic backgrounds and expectation into contact with one another, which can lead to frustration and injustice.

Developing Countries

Is this globalisation?

22

Is globalisation Westernization?

One view about cultural globalisation is that it supports Western, or specifically American, culture so that the flow of culture is all one way.

Westernization - a process whereby societies come under or adopt Western culture.

One one hand, it's good:

  • human rights

  • freedom

  • gender equality

On the other hand, it's bad:

  • exploitation

  • end of local cultures

23

media

Cultural Imperialism - the rich countries not dominate the world through their cultural influence.

24

Group Activity (20 Minutes)

Three groups; read pp. 64-65

Make an argument about Westernization:

  • is it good or bad?

  • how does it work?

  • how influential is it?

Share your ideas by making a poster.

Argument - a reason or set of reasons given with the aim of persuading others that an action or idea is right or wrong.
