Heat is a form of energy that can be transferred from one object to another with different temperatures. Heat flows from the hotter body to the colder. There are three types of heat transfer, conduction, convection and radiation.
The transfer of heat through solid materials is called conduction. Conduction is the heat transfer from a substance to another by contact. Heat travels in air and water by convection. When liquid or gas is heated, the molecules of the heated part move faster and away from each other. Warm liquid rises and cold liquid sinks. This movement continues until the liquid is evenly heated.
Heat can also be transmitted across empty space or vacuum. This is called radiation.
11
Conduction is the transfer of heat through solid materials. There are materials that allow heat to flow through easily, we call them conductors. That’s why we use them as cooking utensils because heat moves fast through the metal pan to the food. There are materials through which heat passes slowly or not at all. We call this insulator. Some insulators are wood, plastic and ceramic.
Convection is the transfer of heat through circulation. Liquids and gases transfer heat this way. Water rises when heated and sinks when cooled, thus producing circulation.
12
Radiation does not depend on the presence of matter to transfer heat. The heat we receive from the sun is radiant energy. Radiant energy travels as waves through space. Heat waves hit earth and cause warming. Our atmosphere traps the warmth.

Multiple Choice
A piece of metal will feel colder than a piece of wood at the same temperature. Why?
Metals are colder than wood.
Metals, in general, are good heat conductors.
Wood, in general, is a poor insulator.
Metals, in general, have a higher specific heat capacity than wood.

SITUATION: The equipment you have at home are very useful and essential. They could make the job at home easier and lighter especially if you know how to use each of this equipment. However, improper use of these things may become dangerous and may cause us harm. You will make a poster chart showing what you should do in using the equipment that produce heat. Your outputs will be assessed using the following: benefit to the community, message/clarity, presentation/organization.
28
GOAL: Show what to do in using the equipment that produce heat.
PRODUCT: Make a poster chart showing what you should do in using the equipment that produce heat
You can use your phone in editing (can be digital or not). This is just a sample of a poster chart. Make sure you will do the product of the assigned task.
