From John Hersey’s Hiroshima - “He became an ______, mechanically wiping, daubing, winding, wiping, daubing, winding.”
Which vocab word best fits in the blank?
automaton
antithesis (a person or thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else)
nonchalance
introversion
4
I hope you chose letter b!
an automaton is a robot (this definition is on your vocab list!)
antithesis means the direct opposite of someone/something else, but there's no one else in the sentence to compare the mechanical person to.
nonchalance (besides meaning calm or relaxed) doesn't start with a vowel
introversion (the state of being an introvert, someone who is more shy or less outgoing than others)

Multiple Choice
From Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring - “Honey Bees become wildly agitated and _______ on contact with it.”
biomorphic
eccentric
matriarchal ( an older woman who is powerful within a family or organization)
bellicose
7
We were looking for something to do with agitated.
biomorphic (according to the vocab definitions) = a shape based on nature. Doesn't sound very agitated.
eccentric means strange. But weird isn't the same as agitated
Moms CAN BE agitated, but you don't need to be nervous or upset to be a mom. :)
bellicose means aggressive. Someone/something that is upset may be aggressive, so this makes the most sense!

Multiple Choice
From Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Why We Can’t Wait - “We were not ______ advocating lawlessness.”
Anarchists
belligerents
centrists (a person who has moderate political views)
Audiophiles
10
I hope that you had a 50/50 chance of getting this right!
Someone who is an anarchist doesn't believe in law or authorities, so they WOULD want lawlessness.
belligerents are people who are angry (but not necessarily illegal anger...)
centrists would DEFINITELY not be up for illegal things
audiophiles like good quality sound, but that has nothing to do with lawlessness, either.
