4.2 - Patterns and Linear Functions

2

Objective

To identify and represent patterns that describe linear functions.

3

Vocabulary

Independent Variable

A variable that stands alone and isn't changed by the other variables you are trying to measure.

The independent variable is the input of the function and is the x coordinate of the ordered pair.

4

Vocabulary

Dependent Variable

A variable whose value depends on other factors

The dependent variable is the output of the function and is the y coordinate of the ordered pair.

5

When we did the In-N-Out 100x100 activity you all developed a pattern for determining the cost of an off-the-menu item like a 4x4.

We've done this before

Burger

Cost

Cheeseburger

2.95

Double-Double

4.25

3x3

5.55

4x4

6.85

Starting from a basic cheeseburger, every additional patty & cheese slice is $1.30.

7

Open Ended

Write an equation you could use to determine the cost of an off-menu burger with any number of patties & cheese slices:

8

Essential Understanding

The value of one variable may be uniquely determined by the value of another variable. Such relationships may be represented using tables, words, equations, sets of ordered pairs, and graphs.

Function

  • In that example we could say that the perimeter is a function of the number of rectangles.

  • A function is a relationship that pairs each input value with exactly one output value

  • A linear function is a function whose graph is a nonvertical line or part of a nonvertical line.
