During the 19th century, popular culture increasingly depicted Native Americans as part of nature, inferior peoples, dying off and being replaced by the civilized, white people. This is the myth of the dying Indian, the idea that Native Americans were naturally dying off, leaving the land for white settlers and "civilization." Part of this lesson will be challenging those notions. As you review this lesson, think of these images and ask yourself, "Do they match the historical documents about Native Americans?"
