ADDITION OF INTEGERS

HOW DO WE ADD INTEGERS?

1. If the integers have the same signs,

a. The sum of two positive integers is positive.

 examples: 4 + 17 = 21

3 + 5 = 8

b. The sum of two negative integers is negative.

 examples: -7 - 2 = -9

-3 + (-5) = -3 - 5 = -8

3

Add the following

1. 13 + 24 =

2. 16 + 18 =

3. 36 + 55 =

4. -25 - 64 =

5. (-57) + (-48) =

1. 37

2. 34

3. 91

4. -89

5. -105

4

2. if the integers have different signs

Subtract their absolute values. The sum is ...

a. positive if the positive integer has the greater value.

example: 36 + (-8) = ?

b. negative if the negative integer has the greater value.

example: 4 + (-9) = ?

5

Another easier way

Simplify first before adding or subtracting.

Make sure that each term has only one sign.

Add a negative +(-) = -

Subtract a positive -(+) = -

Add a positive +(+) = +

Subtract a negative -(-) = +

6

examples

1. 3 + (-4) = ?

= 3 - 4

= -1

2. 6 - (+4) = ?

 = 6 - 4

 = 2

3. -3 - (-4) = ?

= -3 + 4

= 1

4. -6 + (+4) = ?

 = -6 + 4

 = -2

5. 9 - (-4) = ?

= 9 + 4

= 13

6. -(-8) - (-4) = ?

 = 8 + 4

 = 12

7

More examples

1. 7 + (-7) = ?

= 7 - 7

= 0

2. -6 - (+14) = ?

 = -6 - 14

 = -20

3. 52 - (4) = ?

= 52 - 4

= 48

4. -24 + (-16) = ?

 = -24 - 16

 = -40

5. -29 - (24) = ?

= -29 -24

= -53

6. -(+8) + (-4) = ?

 = -8 - 4

 = -12
