Intolerable or Coercive Acts

After the Boston Tea Party, the British were very angry with the colonists. So they created a set of laws that punished the Massachusetts Colonists. These laws were the Boston Port Act, Massachusetts Government Act, Administration Of Justice Act, the Quartering Act, and the Quebec Act.

The Boston Port Act

In response to the Sons of Liberty and the Colonists dumping the tea into the Boston Port, the British closed the Port until the Colonists paid for the destroyed tea.

The Massachusetts Government Act

This was also in response to the Boston Tea Party. This Act abolished (got rid of) the Massachusetts Charter (the document of rights the colonists had) and replaced the Governor of Massachusetts with a British Governor.

The Administration of Justice Act

This act allowed British officials (a person who has responsibility in a government) charged with serious crimes to be tried in another colony or Great Britain. It allowed people to be charged with a less severe sentence for their crimes.

The Quartering Act

The Quartering Act of 1765 made it so that colonists had to allow, or let in, the British soldiers no matter what. This also meant you had to provide them with food, clean clothes, water, and a place to sleep even if you did not want to.

The Quebec Act

The Quebec Act expanded the territory of Quebec and gave Catholics freedom of religion and reorganized Quebec's government. This meant that the American Colonists had less land and less freedom. And it made them upset.
