Reading is a complex skill that involves several essential components. To support your child's

reading journey, it's important to understand these components. There are five main areas we

focus on:

Components of Reading for K-12 Students

5

  1. Phonemic Awareness: recognizing and working with sounds in spoken words.

  2. Phonics: Understanding the relationship between letters and sounds to decode words.

  3. Vocabulary: Knowing the meaning of words to improve comprehension.

  4. Fluency: The ability to read text accurately, quickly, and with expression.

Comprehension: understanding and interpreting what is read.

6

  1. Daily Reading Time: Set aside 20 minutes every day for independent reading. This habit boosts fluency and comprehension.

  2. Interactive Read-Alouds: Reading aloud to your child exposes them to more complex vocabulary and sentence structures.

  3. Use Context Clues: Encourage your child to look for clues in the text to figure out unknown words instead of immediately telling them.

  4. Ask Questions: After reading, ask questions like 'What was the main idea?' or 'Why do you think the character acted that way?' This promotes critical thinking and deeper comprehension.

  5. Reading Materials at the Right Level: Make sure the books are not too easy or too difficult. We call this the 'Goldilocks Zone'—just right for your child’s current reading ability."

"Learning to read can be fun! Here are some creative activities you can do at home to help your child love reading:

  1. Word Hunts: Create a scavenger hunt where your child finds words around the house or in a book.

  2. Reading Games: Play games like Scrabble, Boggle, or make your own word puzzles to build vocabulary.

  3. Story Re-Telling: After reading a short story, ask your child to act out or retell the story in their own words.

  4. Create a Family Reading Challenge: Set a goal for the number of books your family will read in a month, and reward progress with a fun outing or prize."

"Building confidence is key to a successful reading experience. Children who believe they can read well will approach books with enthusiasm rather than frustration. Here’s how you can boost your child’s reading confidence:

  1. Praise Effort, Not Perfection: Celebrate their progress, even if they make mistakes.

  2. Set Realistic Goals: Set small, achievable reading goals. For example, finishing a short book or reading a chapter independently.

  3. Use Positive Reinforcement: Offer encouragement like 'I love how you sounded out that tough word!' or 'You’re doing such a great job with your reading!'

  4. Choose Books of Interest: Let your child pick books based on topics they enjoy. When reading is interesting, it becomes less of a chore and more of a joy."

"Frustration can cause children to avoid reading altogether.
Here’s how you can help reduce that frustration and keep your child engaged:

  1. Take Breaks: If your child is feeling overwhelmed, take short breaks to reset and recharge.

  2. Offer Support: If they’re struggling with a word, guide them to use phonics or context clues to figure it out.

  3. Use Tools: Reading apps, audiobooks, and graphic novels can make reading less intimidating and more interactive.

  4. Be Patient: Remind your child that it’s okay to make mistakes and that reading is a skill that gets better with practice."
