Like all living things, plants need food in order to survive. Unlike humans, a plant cannot go to the grocery store and shop for food when it is hungry.
This is not a problem because plants are able to make their own food.

Photosynthesis
The process that plants use to make food is called photosynthesis.
The word "photo" is the Greek word for "light." Plants rely on light from the sun to help them make food.

How Does Photosynthesis Work?
Photosynthesis occurs inside of plant leaves. Plants breathe in air just like we do. When humans breathe, we want to breathe in oxygen.
When plants breathe, they want to breathe in carbon dioxide, which is another gas found in the air.

How does Photosynthesis Work?

Leaves are mde up of many tiny cells. Inside of each cell you can find chloroplast. Chloroplast is what makes leaves green!

Chloroplast mixes together carbon dioxide, sunlight, and water to make sugar and oxygen.
Plants use the sugar as food to keep them alive, and breathe the oxygen back out into the atmosphere.
