Life Stage of Amphibians

​A frog is a type of animal called an amphibian. Amphibians live on land and in the water. They can breathe air like us, and, they can breathe underwater with their gills, like a fish.

A frog begins its life as an egg. The mother frog lays her eggs in the water.

​When the baby frog is inside its egg, it is called an embryo.

​When the baby frog hatches from its egg, it is called a tadpole. It swims with its long tail.

​Slowly, the tadpole grows its legs, and develops lungs. At this stage, it is called a froglet. It can breathe air and come out of the water.
