The First Attempt: The initial expedition (trip) led by Sir Richard Greenville in 1585
The Second Attempt: In 1587, a second group of colonists arrived led by John White, including women and children. There was no one left there from the first expedition and the assumption was that they had all died.

This group needed more supplies and so John White traveled back to England. It took him 3 years to return back to Roanoke!!
Upon his return, he found it was completely abandoned.
