Read the problem carefully
Understand the story: Who is involved, what is happening?
Take note of key information
Identify important numbers, keywords, and what the question is asking
Determine the math
Decide if you need to add, subtract, multiply, or divide based on the problem
Solve the problem
Find the answer and check your work

Word Problem Example
Lets start with something simple: Sara has 8 markers. Her friend gives her 5 more markers. How many markers does Sara have now?
First, you should find out how much of an object someone starts out with. In this case, Sara starts out with 8 markers
Second, you should find if the amount of the object changes at all. In this case, Sara's friend gives her 5 more markers. Keep in mind, she had 8 at first
So, if Sara had 8 markers, and gains 5 more, how many does she have?

Word Problem Key-Words
More = Addition
Example: If you have 4 slices of pizza, and you get 2 more, how many do you have now?
Gave/Lost = subtraction
Example: You have 5 marbles, you lost 2, and gave 1 to your friend, how many do you have now?
Each = Multiplication (sometimes division)
Example: There are 2 rows of chairs, each row has 5 chairs. How many chairs are there?
Shared/Every = Division
Example: If 10 slices of pizza are shared equally between 5 people, then how many slices does each person have?
