How to do word problems

19

Step-by-step process

  • Read the problem carefully

    • Understand the story: Who is involved, what is happening?

  • Take note of key information

    • Identify important numbers, keywords, and what the question is asking

  • Determine the math

    • Decide if you need to add, subtract, multiply, or divide based on the problem

  • Solve the problem

    • Find the answer and check your work

20

Word Problem Example

Lets start with something simple: Sara has 8 markers. Her friend gives her 5 more markers. How many markers does Sara have now?

First, you should find out how much of an object someone starts out with. In this case, Sara starts out with 8 markers
Second, you should find if the amount of the object changes at all. In this case, Sara's friend gives her 5 more markers. Keep in mind, she had 8 at first

So, if Sara had 8 markers, and gains 5 more, how many does she have?
