Multiple Transformations

  • Sometimes more than one transformation is applied to an image. When this happens, you will do one transformation and then a second one. Let's look at some examples.

7

Example: Translate, Then Reflect

Rectangle LMNO was translated 4 units down and 2 units right (x+2, y-4).

Then, the new image was reflected over the y-axis. Sketch the image after the translation and reflection.

media

8

After the translation, the new points for rectangle LMNO  are L'(-4,-1), M'(-4,-3), N'(1,-3), and O'(1,-1). Once we have translated, we can now reflected those new points over the y-axis.

media

9

So, after a translation of down 4 units 2 units right and then a reflection over the y-axis, the new coordinates of rectangle LMNO are

L'(4, -1), M'(4, -3), N'(-1, -3)and O'(-1, -1).
