2
4-7a Review - Writing Names
Write the name of the metal first
Write the name of the nonmetal, but change the ending to -ide
Example:
Mg3P2 Magnesium phosphide
3
Poll
What is the correct name for Li2O?
Dilithium Oxide
Lithium Oxygen
Lithium Oxide
Dilithium oxygen
4
4-7a Review - Writing Formulas
Write symbols of the elements
Write the charges of the elements
Balance the charges (cross down)
Example:
Sodium Nitride
Step 1: NaN
Step 2: Na+1 N-3
Step 3: Na3N
5
Poll
What is the correct formula for aluminum sulfide?
AlS
Al3S2
Al-2S+3
Al2S3
6
Using Transition Metals in Naming
You can't look up the charges of transition metals, so you have to include the charge as a roman numeral in the name.
The charge will go in parenthesis () after metal name
Roman numerals: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII
Steps:
Write the name of the metal
Find the charge
Write the name of the nonmetal with the ending ide
7
Example
CuO Copper ( ) Oxide
Charges have to balance out, so we use the charge of oxygen to find the charge of copper
Oxygen = -2 Since there's no subscripts, Cu must be +2 to
cancel out the -2
Name: Copper (II) oxide
8
Example #2
Mn2O7 Manganese ( ) oxide
This time there's subscripts. Remember, these subscripts are equal to the opposite element's charge.
So, the charge of manganese has to be +7
Manganese (VII) oxide
9
Poll
What is the correct name of Ag2O
Silver (I) oxide
Silver oxide
Silver (II) oxide
Silver (II) oxide (I)
10
Formulas with Transition Elements
The charge is given to you in the name, so just use the charge given for the metal and look up the charge for the nonmetal
Step 1: Write the element symbols
Step 2: Use the roman numeral number for the charge of the metal. Look up the nonmetal charge
Step 3: Cross down the numbers. Cancel numbers if they are the same
11
Example
Gold (III) chloride
Au = +3
Cl = -1
Au+3 Cl-1 Cross numbers down
AuCl3
12
Poll
What is the formula for chromium (III) oxide
Cr2O3
Cr3O2
CrO
Cr3O
