1

Neuron

a nerve cells

Slide image

2

aim

  • you will establish the relationship between nerve cell structure and fuction;

  • analyze functions of the nervous tissue and its structural components

Slide image

3

Nervous system

controls and regulates the body

4

Nervous tissue contains two types of cells:

  • neuron (accept and conduct signals)

  • glia-neuroglia (support and protect neurons)

  • there are more glial cells than neurons

5

Poll

How many cells have in nervous tissue?

2

3

6

NEURONS

consists three parts (cell body, dendrite, axon)

7

Neuron

  • body (contains most of cell organelles and nucleus)

  • dendrite (short projection of neuron, it receives the nerve signal (information) and transfers it TO the body, one neuron usually has many denrites)

  • axon ( long projection, it send information AWAY from the body, a neuron has only one axon)

8

Multiple Choice

What is the part of the neuron that brings information TO the cell body?

1

dendrite

2

axon

9

Multiple Choice

What is the part of the neuron that takes information AWAY from the cell body?

1

dendrite

2

axon

10

Functionally neurons can be divided into 3 groups

  • Sensory neurons ( receive signals from sensory organs and carry it to the nervous system)

  • Interneurons (they are in the brain and spinal cord, they receive signals from sensory neurons and give them to motor neurons)

  • Motor neurons (take signals from interneurons and send them to effector cells(mostly muscle cells)

11

Open Ended

Give an example for sensory organs?

12

Multiple Choice

Which type of neurons are located in brain?

1

Sensory neurons

2

Interneurons

3

Motor neurons

13

2 types of axon

  • Myelinated axons are covered by myelin protein. they conduct information faster

  • Unmyelinated axons are not covered by myelin protein. they conduct information slowly

14

synapse

connection between two neurons

................................

permits a neuron  to pass a signal to another neuron

Slide image

15

neurotransmitters

information passes from one neuron to another through special molecules

.....................

AXON produces neurotransmitters
