What is Note-taking for the TOEFL IBT?
Note-taking is a key skill in the TOEFL IBT listening section. Conversations and lectures are fairly long, approximately three and five minutes long. Taking notes will assist you in recalling the information you need to answer the questions.

Listen for attitude (feelings and opinions).
Listen for function (the real meaning behind the speaker´s words).
Listen for the student´s problem in a conversation.
Listen to the end of the conversation to infer what the student will probably do next.
Listen for signal words and phrases in lectures. (Today we´ll be talking about...).
Listen for new terminology and repeated information in lectures. The test often contains questions on this information.
Know when to take notes. Listen first, then write.

Write key content words such as nouns and verbs.
Do not write function words such as articles, auxiliary verbs, prepositions, or pronouns unless they convey essential meaning.

Keep your notes organized as you are listening. In that way, you will be able to understand better.
Organize your notes
If you use abbreviations you will be able to write more things easily, just be careful to remember the meaning of the abbreviated word, or you will be lost.
