A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. It is used to help avoid repetition.

Pronouns have four properties🡪 person, number, gender, and case

Person🡪 Who the pronoun is referring to.

  • 1st person (the speaker)🡪 I, me, we, us

  • 2nd person (the person spoken to)🡪 you

  • 3rd person (the person spoken about)🡪 he, him, she, her, it, they, them

Number🡪 singular or plural

  • How many people or things are being referred to?

  • Singular🡪 I, me, you, it, he, him, she, her

  • Plural🡪 we, us, you, they, them

Gender🡪 Whether the word the pronoun replaces is feminine, masculine, or neutral.

  • Feminine🡪 she, her

  • Masculine🡪 he, him

  • Neutral🡪 I, me, you, it, they, them

Case🡪 How the pronoun is used in the sentence. Does the pronoun perform the action of the sentence (subjective case), receive the action as a direct object, indirect object, or object of the preposition (objective case), or show ownership (possessive case)?

  • Subjective🡪 I, we, you, he, she, it, they

  • Objective🡪 me, us, you, him, her, it, them

  • Possessive🡪 mine, ours, yours, his, hers, its, theirs
