Parallel and Perpendicular Lines Linear Equations

Unit 2 Lesson 4:
Parallel and Perpendicular Lines

Goal:

Students are going to use their understanding of parallel and perpendicular lines to create linear equations with parallel and perpendicular slopes.

Linear equations with the same slope.

​Equations of Parallel Lines

Concept:

Linear equations with slopes that are reciprocal opposites.

​​Equations of perpendicular Lines

Concept:

Procedures: For a Parallel Line w/ a Point

1) Substitute the given (x, y) into the point slope form of the given slope intercept equation.
2) Solve for y to convert to slope intercept form.

Procedures: For a Perpendicular Line w/ a Point

1) Substitute the given (x, y) into the point slope form of the given slope intercept equation.
2) Change the slope to its reciprocal opposite.
3) Solve for y to and convert to slope intercept form.

Example 1:

Through: (2, 5), parallel to y = 3x + 1

Example 2:

Through: (-5, 4), perpendicular to y = 5x - 2
