(Common) Noun

A noun is a person, place or thing.

(Proper) Noun

A proper noun is a unique or well-known person, place or thing.

Pronoun

A pronoun is a word which is used in place of a noun (common or proper). There are many types of pronouns, and we can learn them all!

Adjective

An adjective changes or describes a noun.

Verb

A verb is a word or words that show an action or a state of being.

Adverb

An adverb changes or describes a verb or another adverb. It usually answers one of these questions: How? Where? When? How much? How often?

Preposition

A preposition is a word that tells you where or when something is in relation to something else.

Conjunction

A conjunction connects words, phrases, clauses or sentences.

Use “FANBOYS” to help you remember these:

F=for

A=and

N=nor

B=but

O=or

Y=yet

S=so

There are three articles: a, an and the.

Interjection

A word or phrase that is used for exclamation, excitement, surprise, disbelief, etc…

Here are some things to remember:

  • Only interjections can be a sentence on their own.

  • Words can be more than one part of speech. For example, book can be a noun and a verb, apartment can be a noun and an adjective and down can be a verb and a preposition.

  • A complete sentence must have a noun and a verb.
