Leading Coefficient

• Once a polynomial is in Standard Form, we can easily identify the Leading Coefficient

• As the name suggests, the Leading Coefficient is the coefficient of the first term (which is the term with the highest exponent)

•  $8x^4-3x^3+12x_{ }^2+5x-16$  is a 4th degree polynomial (aka Quartic) whose LEADING COEFFICIENT is 8.

• The sign of the  leading coefficient combined with the degree will give us a lot of information about the END BEHAVIOR of the polynomial.

Even Degree Polynomials

• Polynomials with an EVEN degree will always end in the same direction.

• UP if the Leading Coefficient is POSITIVE

• DOWN if the Leading Coefficient is NEGATIVE

Odd Degree Polynomials

• Polynomials with an ODD degree will always in in opposite directions (one up, one down).

• If the Leading Coefficient is POSITIVE, the polynomial will go up to the right and down to the left.

• If the Leading Coefficient is NEGATIVE, the polynomial will go down to the right and up to the left.
