The Nonmetals' Secrets

The Nonmetals were known for their tricky behavior. Most of them, like Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Chlorine, had 4 to 7 electrons in their valence shells. This made them quite eager to accept electrons, transforming into powerful negative ions like Chloride, Oxide, and Nitride.

They also had a fiery relationship with Oxygen, creating nonmetal oxides when they combined. These oxides were acidic and formed acids like Carbonic acid (H₂CO₃) or Sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄) when mixed with water. Interestingly, Nonmetals refused to react with dilute acids, maintaining their mysterious aloofness.

Fun facts

The air we breathe is mostly made of nitrogen (a nonmetal), but it doesn’t react easily with anything because of its super-strong triple bond, making it one of the most stable molecules in nature!
