Atomic number = proton number. If you change the
proton/atomic number, you change the element.

If you change the number of neutrons, you change the mass and get an isotope of the
same element.

Isotopes are atoms of the same element that
have a different mass number. This means
that they have a different number of
neutrons.

The relative atomic mass of an element is the
weighted average atomic mass of the naturally
occurring isotopes of an element.

An ion is an atom that has lost or gained
valence electrons.
Cations are positive ions (atoms that have
lost valence electrons).
Anions are negative ions (atoms that have
gained valence electrons).
