  • All the water on earth

  • Ex.) Rivers, streams, ocean, lakes, ponds, underground

  • Solid = ice and snow

  • liquid = water

  • gas = water vapor

  • water moves around by water cycle.

  • Gives clean water to organisms

1.Hydrosphere

Multiple Select

What makes up the hydrosphere?

Select 3

1

oceans

2

rocks

3

ponds

4

lakes

5

tornados

5

  • Hydrosphere affects climates

  • Ocean currents flow between continents.

  • Warm water carried away from coasts to cool it down.

1.Hydrosphere

media

6

  • Leaf Area Index (LAI) shows plants in an area.

  • Darker green = more plants and water

Try it! Look at the map. What areas have the most plants? Which area would be considered a desert?

1.Hydrosphere

media

7

  • All the rocks and soil on earth.

  • provides shelter for organisms

  • Ex.) Mountains, volcanoes, rocks under the ocean

  • Geologists study minerals

2.Geosphere

media

8

Multiple Select

What makes up the geosphere?

Select 2 answers

1

rivers

2

rocks

3

soil

4

rain

9

  • Mountains effect the atmosphere the most by blocking clouds.

  • Clouds go above mountains, condenses, and rain falls on the windward side.

  • Then, on the leeward side, there is no more rain so it is dry.

  • This is called the rainshadow effect.

2.Geosphere

Rainshadow:

When an area is shielded by a mountain and is dry on one side and wet on the other side.

11

Rainshadow in Hawaii

Try it! Which way is the wind blowing? Can you see the rainshadow effect in Hawaii?

The wind is blowing from the east to the north-west.

12

Multiple Choice

What is the rainshadow effect?

1

When there is too many rocks.

2

When there is no more rain.

3

When an area is shielded by a mountain

Multiple Choice

Question image

Which is true?

1

Winds start on LEEWARD side

2

It is wetter on the LEEWARD side.

3

It is dryer on the WINDWARD side

4

It is wetter on the WINDWARD side

14

  • All the life that exists on Earth.

  • Ex.) humans, plants, animals, microorganisms

  • There are 7 biomes in the biosphere:

    • Forest Mountain

    • Grassland Tundra

    • Freshwater

    • Marine

    • Desert

3.Biosphere

media

15

Multiple Choice

What makes up the biosphere?

1

all living organisms

2

all water on earth

3

all rocks and soil

4

all of the air

16

media

Biomes:

  1. Forest

  2. Grassland

  3. Freshwater

  4. Marine

  5. Desert

  6. Mountain

  7. Tundra

Type of biome depends on distance from Equator.

17

Multiple Select

Which of the following are types of biomes?

Select 3 answers

1

desert

2

marine

3

tundra

4

plants

5

animals

18

  • Food web shows how all organisms interact together in the biosphere.

  • Try it! What would happen if you remove one of the animals from the food web?

3.Biosphere

media

19

  • All the gases around Earth

  • Ex.) Nitrogen, Oxygen, argon, Carbon dioxide

  • Gravity holds gases in air and keeps the water vapor from leaving into space.

  • Troposphere gives us air to breathe, traps heat from sun and gives weather.

media

20

Multiple Choice

What makes up the atmosphere?

1

all living organisms

2

all water on earth

3

all rocks and soil

4

all of the air or gases

21

  • Four layers:

    1. Thermosphere (where the international space station is)

    2. Mesosphere (coldest, blocks space debris)

    3. Stratosphere (water vapors evaporate here. Contains ozone)

    4. Troposphere (hottest, makes weather and climate)

media

22

The Ozone layer blocks some harmful ultra violet radiation (UV Rays) that can cause cancer.
