What is the Renaissance? Why is it a “rebirth”?
Renaissance means "rebirth". It refers to the revival of ancient Greek and Roman civilization. It started in Italy. Rich merchants like the Medici family sponsored artistic and intellectual activities and recruited all kinds of talents. With the support of rich merchants, Florence became the center of the Italian Renaissance.
