First Read

Section 1: Pages 79-82

​The poem on page 81 is interesting because it uses simile, repetition, and ellipses. First, José says the smoke is "rising like a wild storm of hope." Since people burn the crops as an act of rebellion, José sees the smoke rising as a good sign that they are ready to fight for freedom again.

This event, paired with the repetition of the words "once again" and the use of ellipses to draw out the pauses between each stanza emphasize that the war is restarting.

​In this poem, Rosa shows her admiration of José Martí. She also notes that although he writes for peace, he had to fight for it. Ultimately, he lost his life.

How do you think Rosa feels about Martí and his passing?

​Lieutenant Death's poem shows you more about his character. In the first stanza, he reveals an internal conflict: he thinks he will no longer be useful after the rebellion.

Then, in the last stanza, he talks about his dreams. Based on his words, what do you think motivates Lieutenant Death?

Section 2: Pages 83-85

​Another key word in this passage is reconcentration. It can be broken down into these word parts:

Reconcentration means the act of bringing things together and into the center again.

​Proclamation is made up of these word parts:

• pro- = forward

• clam = to cry out or declare

• -ation = the act or process of

So, proclamation means the process of calling or putting forward a new idea or rule.

​The solid underlines and this bracketed passage represent key information about General Weyler's new rules. Apparently, he has promised his superiors in Spain that he can crush the rebels in 30 days! That is a huge promise to make considering the wars have been going on for so long.

In the bracketed section, Weyler talks about his new plan to bring all of the peasants together so he can more easily identify the rebels hiding out in the jungle. He thinks this will "portray" the idea that he cares about the peasants when in reality, he is just trying to separate them from the rebels.
