​What is a Rogerian Argument?

​Rogerian Arguments find common ground between two opposing arguments and propose compromises to further along the agenda of both sides of the argument. The thesis statement is stated in your conclusion as you build up to it with adequate evidence. You start with your opponent's viewpoints, then parallel your proof with your side of the argument supported with facts—match category with category. Be open-minded, fair, and respectful to both sides. Neutrality and fairness are critical to the success of a Rogerian argument.

​What a Rogerian argument is not.

• A Rogerian argument is neither confrontational nor has an aggressive tone. The reason is that you will alienate half your audience if you show bias towards one side.

• Your thesis statement is not in the intro, so you don't show your hand early in your opinions.

• A Rogerian argument is not rigid and stubborn when sticking to one side.

​The difficulties of a Rogerian argument

1. Being prideful in your own stance creates immediate bias (Pride goeth before the fall)

2. Holding to a stance too tightly and not wanting to be open enough.

3. Sometimes finding compromises between two sides can be very difficult to handle.

4. Emotions between two sides can cause a stressful transition.
