Safety

General Guidelines

• Read through the lab/activity ALL the WAY before starting.

• Keep area clean/organized to better avoid accidents/injuries.

• In case of emergency, always tell the teacher BEFORE doing anything else (no matter how minor).

Always wear when using chemicals, fire, or things that can get in your eyes.

Safety Goggles

Wear to protect your clothes and skin from chemicals.

Lab Apron

Wear when using heat,, chemicals, and when cutting/breaking is a possiblity.

  • Squeeze: trigger

  • Sweep: all around the fire

How to use a Fire extinguisher:

• Never walk away from a heat source.

• Keep hair tied back.

• Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry.

Chemicals

• No eating/drinking in lab space.

• Wear gloves when handling toxic chemicals.

• Dispose chemicals correctly (ask if not sure how).

• If you get chemicals on you or in your eyes we will use the sinks in the classroom to wash the area.

• Hot and Cold glass all looks the same, so always handle with safety equipment.

• Dispose broken glass with teacher's help in the correct area (not trash can).

Hot and Broken Glass

• Closed toed shoes and long pants are safer when using glass, chemicals, etc.

Closed toed shoes

Used to measure precise volumes of liquids.

Graduated Cylinder

The shape of the container makes it easier to hold liquids for mixing and heating without spilling.

Erlenmeyer Flask

Used to heat, mix, hold, and measure liquids. Not as accurate as graduated cylinders for measuring.

Used as a heat source without an open flame.

​​Hot Plate

Used to heat materials/chemicals with an open flame.

​​Bunsen Burner

Used to measure the mass of objects.

Digital Scale

Used to measure the length, width, and height of objects.

​​Meter stick / Ruler

Used to measure the temperature of objects.

​​Thermometer

Used to transfer liquids from container to small openings.

Funnel

Used to grab onto containers that are hot.

​​Beaker Tongs

Used to measure and dispense small amounts of liquids.
