Following his win at San Jacinto, Sam Houston easily defeated Stephen F. Austin in the first Presidential election for the Republic of Texas. Mirabeau Lamar was elected Vice President. Sam Houston needed to select a capital for the young country. He chose a new settlement named Houston, as the capitol.
