Functions of a Sentence

Question?

These types of sentences ask a question and end in a question mark "?".

Exclamation!

These types of sentences express strong emotion and end with an exclamation mark "!".

Let's look at the sentences in Group 1

• Do you realise that there is always someone or something ‘doing’ the actions in Group 1?

• In Group 1, the verbs have different endings like ‘-ed’ and ‘-ing’.

• Sentences in Group 1 are used to tell someone something.

Let's look at the sentences in Group 2

• There isn’t a person or thing mentioned. In fact, it sounds like someone is asking you to do something!

• In Group 2, the verbs are all in the base form.

• Sentences in Group 2 are used when we want to tell someone to do something.

We call sentences in Group 1 "Statements".

We call sentences in Group 2 "Commands".
