​Food chain

Plants are at the beginning of every food chain​. Plants are called producers because they make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. The plant is then eaten by a herbivore. Example, caterpillar. The caterpillar is called the primary consumer. Only ten percent of the energy is transferred. When the caterpillar is eaten by an animal, example, bird, the bird is called the secondary consumer. The bird uses it's energy to do it's daily activities. When the bird is eaten by an animal, example, snake, only one percent of energy is transferred.
