This diagram represents...

1

An element

2

A molecule

3

A compound

4

A mixture of elements and compounds

8

Solution -

Solutions are homogeneous mixtures of two or more substances.

The solution consists of two parts: a solute and a solvent.

Solute = The substance being dissolved.

Solvent = The substance that is doing the dissolving

Slide image

9

Examples of solutions:

Solutions can be mixtures in any phase. Each of these examples are homogeneous mixtures.

Remember homogeneous mixture means that you can not distinguish individual components of the mixutre; the composition is uniformed.

Multiple Choice

Ocean water is a solution?
1
True
2
False

11

Multiple Choice

A tablespoon of a substance is added to warm water and stirred. The result was that the substance could no longer

be seen.

We can conclude from the results that the substance –

1

is less dense that water

2

heated the water

3

flavored the water

4

dissolved in water

12

Multiple Choice

A mixture is always a solution, but a solution is NOT always a mixture.
1
True
2
False

_____ means to spread out evenly in a liquid.
1
melt
2

15

Multiple Choice

Solutions are a special kind of mixture in which __________.

1

Each object stays the same in the mixture

2

substances are dissolved together

16

Poll

Water is not known as the universal solvent.

True

False

17

Open Ended

Why is water a universal solvent?

18

Separating Mixtures

There are many methods to separate out the different components to a mixture.

Evaporation: Separates solids from liquids

Filtration: Separates different size particles

Magnetic: Separates solids from solids

19

Multiple Choice

Which one of the following would you use to separate sand from iron filings?
1
a bar magnet
2
filter paper
3
chromatography paper
4
alum

20

Multiple Choice

Question image

This type of paper allows liquid to pass through it. What tool is it?

1

sieve

2

filter

21

Multiple Choice

To separate a mixture of salt and water what separation tool/method is used?

1

Filter

2

Sieve

3

Magnet

4

Evaporation

22

Evaporation

A technique used to separate a mixture (solution) of a soluble solid and the solvent.

Heat the solution until the liquid turns into a gas, and the solute will be left behind as a solid.

Slide image

23

Filtration

This technique is used to separate mixtures that have particles that are different sizes.

Some filters are designed to separate stream water. They separate the water from the bacteria.

Mixtures with relatively large particle sizes, can be filtered through something like a coffee filter.

24

Magnetic

This technique uses a magnet to separate magnetic material from nonmagnetic material.

25

Multiple Choice

Sodium chloride can be separated from rock salt by first adding water to the mixture to dissolve the sodium chloride. The separation then takes place in two stages:
1
evaporation followed by filtration
2
 distillation followed by decanting
3
filtration followed by evaporation
4
filtration followed by decanting

26

Multiple Choice

Question image
Evaporation is good for separating a mixture (solution) of a soluble solid and a solvent. The process involves heating the solution until the solvent evaporates (turns into gas) leaving behind the solid residue.
Evaporation is good for separating a mixture (solution) of a soluble solid and a solvent.
True or False?
1
False
2
True

27

Multiple Choice

Question image
In filtration, the liquid part collected is called the filtrate and the solid bit that remained on the filter paper is called the residue.
In filtration, what is the part that remains in the filter paper called?
1
Solid
2
filtrate
3
remainder
4
residue

28

Multiple Choice

Filtration is a common method of separating an insoluble solid from a liquid. An example of a mixture is sand and water. This process involves the use of a filter paper placed in a filter funnel. The funnel is placed in a beaker and the mixture of water and sand is poured into the funnel. The liquid part drains through the filter paper into the beaker, leaving the solid sand particles trapped on the filter.
Filtration is a common method of separating an insoluble solid from a liquid.
True or False?
1
True
2
False

29

Multiple Choice

A cup of orange juice with pulp is poured into a glass. Which of these procedures could be done to separate the juice from the pulp?

1

pour the juice through a coffee filter

2

heat the juice in a pot until boiling

3

pour the juice in another cup

4

allow the mixture to settle, leaving the pulp at the bottom of the glass

30
