The relationship between solubility and temperature can be represented by a solubility curve
• each point on a curve represents the maximum amount of the solute that can be
dissolved in 100 g of water at a particular temperature. Therefore, each point on
the curve represents a saturated solution
• any point below a curve represents an unsaturated solution
• any point above a curve represents a supersaturated solution
• for most solids, as temperature increases, the solubility increases

Use Figure beside to find how many grams of sodium nitrate (NaNO₃) will dissolve in 100 g of water at 50°C

Example:

1. Draw a vertical line from 50°C on the horizontal axis to
   intersect with the solubility curve for NaNO₃.

2. Draw a horizontal line from the intersection point of the vertical line
   drawn in the previous step. The point where this horizontal line intersects with the vertical axis will give the mass of dissolved substance.
