ENG301 Reading Review-Summary Completion
2
What is being tested?
In this kind of question a candidate is required to complete a summary of the text OR a part of the text.
You will either be given a list of words to choose from (pic 1) OR you will need to select words from the text. (pic 2)
3
This question type is testing your ability to understand main ideas.
All of the information contained in the summary will also be contained in the reading text. However, synonyms and paraphrasing are used, so don’t expect to see the same words.
4
What you need to do......
Read the 'gapped' summary to get an overall understanding and a feel for what is missing.
Decide whether it is a summary of the whole text or a part of the text.
Look for keywords before and after the gap.
Choose either words from the list OR EXACT WORDS from the text to complete the summary.
Identify the part of speech needed for each gap e.g. noun, verb or adjective
5
TIP.......
As well as thinking about grammar, you should also be thinking about COLLOCATION: which words go together, for example what nouns usually go with the verb express?
