A syllable is a word part that contains a vowel and is said as one unit. There are SIX types of syllables.

The type of syllable tells what sound the vowel makes.

What is a closed syllable?

A closed syllable has one vowel which is followed by one or more consonants.

  • ​When a vowel in closed in by a consonant, the vowel only makes its short sound.

  • Examples: cat, ​mop, in, up, spell, truck, chomp, vet
