What is the length measured by the vernier calipers?

9

In the diagram, what is the length measured by the vernier calipers?

Main scale reading = 5.9 cm
Vernier scale reading = 0.03 cm
Actual measurement = 5.93 cm

Question image

What is the length measured by the vernier calipers?

11

Zero Error

•If the jaws are closed but the zero marks on the main scale and the vernier scale are not in line, there is an error known as the zero error.

•The readings will differ from the actual length.

To get the correct value, the zero error is subtracted from the reading.

12

Positive zero error

Zero marking is towards the RIGHT of the zero mark on the main scale.

It is called POSITIVE zero error

What is the zero error?

14

Negative zero error

Zero marking is towards the LEFT of the zero mark on the main scale.

It is called NEGATIVE zero error.

Question image

What is the zero error?

16

Fill in the Blank

When measuring an object using vernier caliper with a positive zero error of +0.02 cm, it shows a reading of 5.24 cm.

What is the correct measurement?

17

When measuring an object using vernier caliper with a positive zero error 0f +0.02 cm, it shows a reading of 5.24 cm. What is the correct measurement?

Corrected Reading = 5.24 cm – (+0.02 cm)

                                = 5.22 cm

18

Fill in the Blank

When measuring an object using vernier caliper with a negative zero error of -0.04 cm, it shows a reading of 5.24 cm.

What is the correct measurement?

19

When measuring an object using vernier caliper with a negative zero error of -0.04 cm, it shows a reading of 5.24 cm.

What is the correct measurement?

Corrected Reading = 5.24 cm – (-0.04 cm)

                                 = 5.28 cm
