Lincoln contrasts "the brave men" who fought and died with "us the living" and moving from:

Lincoln's Last Sentence

Lincoln wanted to inspire his listeners, "us the living", that were experiencing loss and grief, "to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced," to "the great task remaining before us," namely, victory in the war and the restoration of the Union.
