Solvent and Solute

  • Imagine we mix salt with water. We obtain a homogeneous mixture with two components

  • The solvent is the main component, water in this case.

  • The solute is the secondary component, salt in this case.

  • We can also have solid mixtures (for example inoxidable steel, which is a mixture of iron and a little bit of carbon) as well as gaseous mixtures (such as the air we breathe).

8

Multiple Choice

In the case of inoxidable steel (acer inoxidable), what would be the solvent and what would be the solute?

1

Solvent: iron, solute: carbon

2

Solvent: carbon, solute: iron

9

Fill in the Blanks

Actually, water itself is a homogeneous mixture! What would be the solute in drinking water?

Type answer...

10

Colloids

In some homogeneous mixtures, if we use a microscope, we can distinguish the solute from the solvent. In the image to the right, we can see what mayonnaise looks like under a microscope.

These mixtures are called colloids.

The main component of a colloid is sometimes called dispersion medium. The secondary component is called dispersed phase.

11

Types of colloids

Here you can see the different types of colloids there are. They are classified according to the state (gas, liquid or solid) of both the dispersion medium and the dispersed phase.

Poll

What do you think about these interactive lessons?

I would like to do more of these!

I prefer having quizzes with questions only.

I would prefer to do the homework in paper.

I don't really care
