Volume with Fractional Edge Lengths

How can you determine the volume of a rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths?

Volume = L x W x H

L =  $1\ \frac{1}{2}$    W =   $1\ \frac{1}{2}$    H =  $1\ \frac{1}{2}$  

Volume =  $1\ \frac{1}{2}\times1\ \frac{1}{2}\times1\ \frac{1}{2}$  


1. Convert Mixed Numbers into improper fractions.   $1\ \frac{1}{2}\ =\ \frac{3}{2}$  

Volume = L x W x H

2. Multiply the improper fractions.

   $\frac{3}{2}\times\frac{3}{2}\times\frac{3}{2}=\frac{27}{8}$ 

Volume = L x W x H

3. Simplify the improper fraction. 

   $\frac{27}{8}=27\div8=3\ \frac{3}{8}$
