Pronouns
15
Pronouns
A pronoun is a word that takes the place of one or more nouns.
Some pronouns replace a noun that is named in a sentence, like:
Amy likes to help people. She volunteers on Saturdays.
Other Pronouns, such as anyone, nobody, and everything, stand for people and things that are not named, like:
Everything is in place.
Nobody wanted to go home.
16
Pronouns
Pronouns must agree with the nouns they replace. The personal pronouns, I, he, she, it, and you can replace a singular noun in a sentence.
Miss Miller is the mayor. She is good at her job.
The children cleaned the park. It was dirty.

Vocabulary Strategy
Suffixes -ful and -less
33
Suffixes -ful and -less
We can often figure out the meaning of an unknown word by looking at the parts of words. A suffix is a word part that can be added to the end of a root word to make a new word. The suffix changes the meaning of the root word.
The suffix -ful means ¨full of.¨ If we say that someone is hopeful, that means that they are full of hope.
The suffix -less means ¨without.¨ If we say the nighttime shy is moonless, that means that it is without a moon, or there is no moon in the sky.
If a word has a suffic, we can sprate the root word from the suffix to find the meaning of the word.
34
What´s next?
Write a word that means the same as the underlined group of words.
For example:
1. Sometimes I feel like I am without thought.
thoughtless
2. Grandma was full of thanks after her birthday party.
thankful
