My favorite way to Brainstorm is to come up with a Brainstorm Web. You come up with as many ideas as you can about one broad topic. This is how you pick out a topic that's not too specific and not too broad .

Here you can see that the student thought about one topic , and then wrote out different ideas about that topic. Let's Try it Now !

Open Ended

Write down one person place or thing you know a lot about.

Now , break down that topic into a smaller part. For example I chose Fantasy Books in the first box, now I'm going to choose different fantasy books I can write about.

Now break down the last topic you wrote about. I chose Harry Potter as a fantasy book topic, now I'm going write down what I like about it or my favorite book from the series.

Here's a completely finished Brainstorm Web. The smallest circles on the outside can actually be used in the essay paragraphs .

Before working on your writer's Notebook

• Create a brainstorm web on a piece of paper to decide on 2 TOPICS

• THEN FILL OUT THE 2 TOPICS ON YOUR WRITERS' NOTEBOOK
