What motivation(s) do engineers have to perform reverse engineering on products?

Taking things apart is a valuable way to learn how something works. Biological dissection has been used to learn about the human body, while mechanical dissection has been used to learn about engineered systems. Think of or research a specific example of how dissection has been used in both medicine and engineering to advance learning and understanding.

What are all of the different inputs to the game controller (for example, the player presses the blue button)?
