Objectives

What is beat?

• an evenly spaced measure of time within a segment of music

• the steady pulse in music that you move to if you're dancing

• ongoing steady pace

a written symbol for a musical silence

a vertical line attached to the notehead; can be to the right and above or to the left and below

an arc shape attached to the stem of the note; divides the note's value by half

a horizontal line that connects two notes by their stems; usually groups multiple notes into 1 beat

How to Compose a 4-Beat Pattern

Each box is worth 1 beat. This means that if you use eighth or sixteenth notes singly, you will need something else in the box.

The hearts are there to give you a visual of the beat. Do NOT copy them in the boxes!
