In this unit, we will travel around the world and learn about musical styles (genres) and instruments from the places we visit.
You will learn more about how different areas of the world have impacted the various techniques and styles of music.

Continent: a large landmass
Culture: the special customs and traditions of a group of people
Genre: a category of music (pop, rock, jazz)

Style: a grouping of music or musical items with shared traits (guitar music)

Place of Origin: a place where something was originally developed
Region: an area of the world with shared characteristics

World Music: The study of techniques and styles of music from regions all around the world.

In this unit, we will study the music from six of the seven continents. Because there are no permanent residents of Antarctica, there is not an established musical culture. We will focus our studies on the music of North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

While music is not like traditional medicine for your physical body, many cultures around the world believe in the healing power of music.
Music is good for your brain, which helps to relax your body and connect to your emotions. Music used as "medicine" is familiar all around the world from all different times in history!

You may notice that some of the instruments we study in this unit look similar to instruments that are familiar to you. Musical instruments may vary in creation based upon the desired usage of the people who created them and the available materials people had to make them with.
