Review of Culture and Tradition

​Native Americans use music in ceremonies to honor nature and the land they live in, promote and celebrate their warriors, and pass special stories of their people on to future generations.

Campfire songs are a tradition in North America, beginning around the late 1800s. They are often sung for fun to appreciate nature and bond with family and friends.

​There are many colorful South American festivals. Music is a large part of these festivals and is often incorporated through listening, performing, and dancing to preserve the culture of significant events through traditional celebrations.

​Many believed each plant had its own song that would help healers. It was also believed that the plant songs helped to remove negative energies from the mind and body.

​In ancient South American traditions, healers of the time were trained to use various different plants as medicine to help heal people.

Music Influences of North America

​​Canada brings French musical influences

​​Much of the popular music that we listen to today is influenced by the blues music of the 1800s. Blues music comes from work songs and spirituals of enslaved African people in the southern United States.

​​Mexican folk music relies heavily on the guitar

​​Central American music bridges the gap between North and South America with musical styles that are blend of Mexican and Latin American influences.

​​Music of the Caribbean islands is influenced by Latin America as well as decendants of enslaved African people.
