Climate Change

The movement of carbon between living and nonliving things

Carbon Cycle

The trapping of the Sun's energy by the atmosphere

Greenhouse Effect

A long shortage of rainfall.

Drought

The top red line indicates the temperature change if humans continue to increase carbon emissions each year.

The middle blue line predicts the temperature change if humans slow carbon emissions now and start reducing carbon emissions by the year 205.

The bottom green line predicts the temperature change if humans begin reducing carbon emissions immediately.

Poll

What gas makes up the largest portion of the Earth's atmosphere?

Oxygen

Nitrogen

Carbon

Hydrogen

8

media

Earth's atmosphere mostly contains nitrogen gas followed by oxygen and then argon.

Greenhouse gases are less than 1% of the gases in Earth's atmosphere.

Greenhouse Gases

9

media

The greenhouse gases absorb energy from the Sun and the light energy becomes thermal energy. This thermal energy causes the atmosphere to become warmer.

Greenhouse Gases:
- carbon dioxide
- methane (CH4)
- water vapor
- nitrous oxide (N2O)

Which of these gases does Earth's atmosphere contain the least of?

1

nitrogen

2

oxygen

3

argon

4

carbon dioxide

11

media

Look at the top graph. It shows how carbon dioxide levels have risen since 1900. Notice it is sloping upwards or increasing.

Look at the bottom graph. It shows the increase in temperatures since 1900. Notice it is sloping upwards or increasing.

The data supports the claim that carbon dioxide and temperature are related.

Do carbon dioxide and temperature relate?

12

media

It is true that Earth has gone through some natural warming and cooling trends over time. But they occur gradually over millions of years.

Whereas the last 200 years, we have seen a large rise in temperatures. (see graph) This is when we humans began burning large amounts of fossil fuels.

Is it due to humans?

13

media

Greenhouse gases trap heat, which leads to Earth getting hotter which leads to climate change.
Climate change is a long-term change in global weather patterns.

Let's look at some of the effects!

Climate Change

14

media

The average temperature of Eath is increasing rapidly. The summer of 2023 was the hottest on record for Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

When it is hotter we use more energy to run fans and air conditioners to cool our homes.

Annual Temperatures

15

media

As the temperatures rise, we are beginning to see stronger hurricanes, hotter summers, colder winters, more frequent and stronger tornadoes, severe droughts, damaging floods and wildfires much more.

Extreme Weather

16

media

The warmer temperatures are causing ice caps to melt, and the sea levels are rising. There are areas where land is being covered by the rising water like Isle de Jean Charles in Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. Only 2% of the island is still above water.

Sea Level

17

media

As temperatures rise, the type of crops that can survive in an area has changed. Farmers have been forced to change the type of crop they grow as the climate changes.

Apple trees need cold weather each winter to bloom and produce apples the next year. If it does not get cold enough the apples will not grow.

Multiple Choice

Which of the following would most likely happen if humans continue to burn fossil fuels for energy?

1

Warmer temperatures will increase food produced.

2

The sea level will rise, covering cities.

3

Polar ice caps will expand, gaining more ice.

4

More clouds will form in the atmosphere, cooling Earth.

20

media

An alternative energy source allows us to generate energy without releasing carbon emissions.
Common Alternative Energy:
- Solar
- Wind
- Hydropower
- Nuclear power

They do not add to climate change!

Multiple Choice

Students in India have developed a car that runs on solar energy. What advantage does the solar car have over our cars powered by gas?

1

The solar car does not produce carbon emissions.

2

The solar car can carry more passengers than our cars.

3

The solar car produces clean water vapor emissions.

4

The solar car can drive more miles on battery power.
