Pick aphids off bush by hand
Place netting over bush
spray with insecticide
I want to keep my rose bushes growing and healthy. Here are some things I could use to get rid of the aphids. Match the example to the type of IPM.

We have talked about:
- Chemical Control
using pesticides to kill pests
- Physical Control
use physical means to control pests
Today we will talk about Biological Controls
5
Biological control uses other organisms to control pests like predators, parasites or a disease.
Examples:
- Rice farms and Ducks to eat snails
- Ladybugs to eat aphids on gardens
- Tomato plants & wasps & hornworms
- caterpillar & Bacillus thuringiensis B.t.

Multiple Choice
Which of the following examples is a biological control used in IPM?
blueberry farms remove netting so birds can eat caterpillars on bushes.
spray plants covered in aphids with hose to knock the insects off.
orchard sprays fungicide, a chemical that kills fungus on peach trees.
poultry farm builds coops to keep predators away from chickesn.

Multiple Choice
AN entomologist is a scientist who specializes in studying insects. How do entomologists assist AgWorks with IPM?
They help identify insects and recommend ways to control them.
They design physical barriers to keep insects out.
They release insect pests onto the plants to study their effects.
They identify the type of pesticide that will best eliminate the pests.
9
Categorize
Removing insects by hand
Spraying insects with pesticide
Releasing predator to eat the insects
AgWorks uses IPM to control pests. Classify each type of pest management as either a chemical, physical, or biological control.
10
They do not use commercial pesticides. They also are specific to one type of pest.
For example, the squash vine borer larvae chew holes in the vines of pumpkins and gourds and often kill the plant. The bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis B.t. kills the larvae but not the adults. It also does not affect birds, reptiles or other mammals.
Advantages of Biological Controls
11
TIME
Biological controls takes a lot of time and effort to be used correctly. You have to identify the pests, research the control, apply and monitor to see if working.
Disadvantages of Biological Controls
BENEFICIAL ORGANISMS
Some organisms affect more than the pest organism. For example, the praying mantis will eat pests, but they will also eat bees which help to pollinate the crop.
SOME PESTS REMAIN
Most biological controls do not destroy every pest. For example, ladybugs eat aphids until the aphids are hard to find then will move one. But some aphids are left to reproduce.
12
Categorize
No pesticides are used
Targets only the pests
Takes time and effort
not all pests are destroyed
some organisms will attach positive organisms too
Classify each statement as either an advantage or a disadvantage of biological control in IPM.
