The season occurs between May and August, with most of the rain falling in the southern part of the subregion. Some years, this results in a fair amount of rain.

December and January, a hot, dry wind known as the harmattan blows from the north. It often carries dust and sand from the Sahara. In western Africa, the harmattan is sometimes referred to as "the doctor" because its dryness—in contrast to the typical humid air of the subregion—is considered invigorating.
