​Luke found out what being a “third child” meant when he was 6 years old. He thought that all little kids were supposed to hide, but on his sixth birthday, he remembered his older brother Mark wanting to have friends over for a birthday party. If you were supposed to hide, no one outside of your family would know who you were, so you would not want to invite a friend to a party.

Luke realizes Matthew and Mark never had to hide, and he asks Mother about it. She tells him about the Population Police, who go around making sure that no family has more than two children. For years, Luke was okay with hiding, because he spent a lot of time with his Mother and always had special treats, and he loved their farmland. Now that the woods have been taken away by the government, Luke is sad that he will have to always stay indoors.

Luke is in his bedroom, which is in an attic that is up a hidden flight of stairs. He is playing with a toy train and thinking about how much he wants to go outside. At this point, he is not allowed to go into any rooms that have an open or uncovered window, so he spends almost all day in the attic. However, Luke discovers that there are two vents in his room that allow him to peek (take a small look) outside. He watches construction workers building new houses on what used to be his family land. He jumps down when his Mother enters, so that he can keep his vents a secret. His Mother warns him that things may get even worse soon.
