Painted wooden figure of the Bodhisattva Guanyin
Jin Dynasty c. 1115-1234
Guanyin is the Bodhisattva most signed out for individual worship in China. A Bodhisattva is one who has attained enlightenment but remains in the human world to help others. Regarded as the Mother goddess or goddess of Mercy.

Bronze Bo Bell
c. 600-400 BC
Called bo in Chinese texts. Played with other bells for court life and ritual practice. This Bo Bell was made at the Houma foundry in Shanxi.

Shiva Nataraja
Probably cast in Thanjavur, South India c. 1100
The Hindu god Shiva embodies the concept of the cyclical nature of life. He is depicted in his most famous form as Nataraja (Lord of the Dance).

Bodhisattva, Buddha, and Hariti
Pakistan c. 100-300

According to Buddhist tradition, Buddha was born with the 32 characteristics of a great man. EX. the Urna or dot between his eyes signifies spiritual wisdom. Hariti is a Buddhist goddess still worshipped in East Asia. She fed her own children with other parents' children. To show her how parents were suffering Buddha hid one of her children under a rice bowl. She was so distraught that she vowed to protect all children and women in childbirth.

Shrines mark the space where heaven and earth meet, and function as receptacles for the gods. This temple contains Shiva in his form as a linga (a standing pillar).

This textile arranges the narrative of Ramayana in three rows. Each scene bears a Tamil inscription. Rama is shown accompanied by his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana during their exile in the forest. Rama and Sita are worshipped as dieties in Hindu.
